The Yaphank Historical Society has dealt with C&H Bookbinding for several years.  Among our interests is the preservation of historical books and documents.  C&H has been very sensitive to our policy of not removing original material unless absolutely necessary.  The firm has meticulously repaired and gently restored our items  The  items have been varied: an early 1700s family bible, an 1858 Chace map of Suffolk County, several volumes written by Mary Louise Booth in the mid to late 1800s, and most recently a leather bound volume 1 of Harpers Bazar dated 1868.  This is a unique and specialized service in Suffolk County.

Twin Novels

Before

After

Mr. Martin, a lawyer and southern gentlemen, gives us carte blanche when it comes to restoring his books. He’s partial to the soft supple feel and look of cowhide leather and this Booth Tarkington set is no exception. We sewed the pages, added marbled French endsheets, and raised ribs along with gold details and corners on the cover.

Altar Book

Before

After

This big red book had to make a statement…to make people stand up and take notice!  We created a new cover in Faux leather from Italy in bright red and added raised ribs outlined in gold to the spine. On both the front and back, we added ornate gold corners and to keep to the original look, we overlaid pattern cut outs from the old cover.

Military Record

This Military Record was preserved but it was really showing its age. Our client asked us to make only subtle changes and if you look closely you might notice them. We adjusted the spine area and corrected some of the stained pages. We added a bit more security to the pages but simply preserved the book as is.

Grandma's cookbook

Before

After

We all have a favorite cookbook that we can never give up but some of them need a little love. This one needed pages resewn and a new matching green cover. Another cookbook saved to pass on to the aspiring chefs in the family.

Prayer book

Before

After

Good things come in small packages so we rebound this worn little book in wine Faux Leather that really shows off the gilded page edges.

roman empire returns

Before

After

This book of Meditations was in dire need of some repair. We replaced the aged cover with a very royal British Tan Faux Leather one and did some interior page repairs as well.

DAMON RUNYON SHORT STORIES RETOLD

Before

After

We replaced the original peeling cloth cover with a Black Buckram one and added some cut outs from the old cover as an overlay. We think this two tone look speaks well of this storyteller, reporter and Broadway author.

1950 Yearbook

Before

After

This treasured yearbook from 1950 was showing its age. It was sorely in need of a new spine for support and then an overlay from the original cover. It looks like it did 66 years ago but now it has some new life in it.

joy of cooking

Before

After

Mrs. Murphy’s Joy of Cooking was her Mom’s and the recipes and notes inside are irreplaceable. But who makes a white cookbook? Obviously, the publishers did and we found a way to preserve this book by replacing the spine and repairing the cracks in the old cover. We also stamped in gold “Mom’s Cookbook” so every generation would go on cooking like Mom.

Medical books

Before

After

Is there a Doctor in the house? These Medical books are in need of help. We wanted to keep the cover with its distressed but beautiful markings. We replaced the spine with something stronger and overlaid the old one to it. We repaired the corners and edges of the covers but maintained its old world charm.

Look of india

Before

A family keepsake from India. We were able to sew the pages but the cloth cover was threadbare and not preservable. We did the next best thing by creating a new acid free wine Faux Leather cover to match the lettering of panels we removed from the old cover and adhered to the new.
