Large Family Bibles

We repair a lot of large family Bibles each year. Most are from the 1800’s and are beautifully decorated. The art is often intricate and unlike anything seen today. They also contain amazing family history. Unfortunately, many have not been properly stored so the leather has become very deteriorated. These are often some of the more involved projects we do. We usually create a new spine for the Bible and often are able to overlay the original spine so as to keep as much of the original cover as possible. Leather conditioner can be applied and the covers can also be re-dyed to help cover worn areas and give it a fresh look. A clear spray coat can help protect the cover and makes the foil decoration shine again. It almost makes the Bible look like it is new again. At times, the clasps need to be repaired as they have become bent or nails have been lost. It is a pleasure working on these large family Bibles.

Below are before and after examples of our work.
